Data Protection Officer to the Swedish Police Authority
Description
Workplace Description
Are you ready for a bigger task? As a data protection officer within the Police, you help ensure that the latest technology is used sustainably within Sweden's largest authority. You get the opportunity to contribute to the Police's mission – to increase safety and reduce crime in society.
The Swedish Police Authority's five data protection officers work together in an independent and autonomous function within the authority. The data protection officer function works to ensure that the rights and freedoms of registered persons are protected when the Police carry out their important societal mission. The function provides advice to the authority's management and staff on matters relating to the processing of personal data and reviews whether the authority processes personal data in accordance with applicable legislation. The data protection officers report directly to the National Police Commissioner.
The data protection officer function is located at the Supervision Unit of the National Police Commissioner's Office. The Supervision Unit also includes four other operational areas:
- Internal supervision to review operations from a legal security perspective.
- External supervision responsible for representing the Swedish Police Authority in supervisory matters in contacts with the Parliamentary Ombudsman (JO), the Chancellor of Justice (JK), the Equality Ombudsman (DO), the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY), and the Security and Integrity Protection Authority (MSI).
- Whistleblower function that receives, assesses, and follows up on reports of irregularities in the authority's operations.
- Handling requests from the National Board of Health and Welfare.
Job Description
As a data protection officer in the Swedish Police Authority's data protection officer function, you continuously develop the function's working methods and plan work together with the other data protection officers. The starting point is a risk-based approach, where the function contributes to strengthening the authority's systematic data protection work.
As a data protection officer, you have considerable freedom to prioritize and organize your work. Each data protection officer typically conducts their own audits and provides advice independently. At the same time, you have good opportunities to discuss your assessments with the other data protection officers and with the data protection lawyers at the Legal Department. The data protection lawyers handle various matters concerning data protection within the authority and provide legal support.
Within the Swedish Police Authority, rapid and extensive development of new methods and tools is underway to strengthen the police's crime-fighting capability. As a data protection officer, you will therefore provide advice on impact assessments concerning the use of new technology such as AI. You will also participate in prior consultations with IMY where required.
Your duties as a data protection officer include, among other things:
- Reviewing the Swedish Police Authority's processing of personal data and reporting your assessments and recommendations to the National Police Commissioner.
- Providing advice to the authority and its employees in connection with operational development and the development of new technical capabilities.
- Providing advice in the development of the authority's internal governance and the handling of external supervisory matters related to data protection.
- Working together with the authority's other data protection officers and collaborating with the authority's data protection lawyers based on your respective roles.
- Participating in networks with other data protection officers in Swedish and international organizations and conducting environmental monitoring.
- Serving as a point of contact for issues related to personal data processing, both within the authority and externally.
The Swedish Police Authority offers the possibility of remote work two days a week, a wellness contribution, and a gym in its own premises. The workplace is currently located in the Sörentorp area of Solna, but may move to Kungsholmen in the future. The data protection officers currently also have the option to work from Kungsholmen when needed.
Qualifications
This is an opportunity for you who have:
- LL.B. or LL.M. degree

- Very good ability to express yourself in Swedish and English, both verbally and in writing
- Swedish citizenship
It is also advantageous if you have:
- Experience working as a data protection officer
· Completed service as a notary or assessor

- Experience in interpreting, implementing, and applying EU legal acts
· Supervisory experience deemed relevant
Personal Characteristics

You have good communication skills and can create and maintain trusting relationships, while safeguarding integrity in your professional practice. You work in a structured manner, have good prioritization skills, and the ability to see the big picture. Furthermore, you have good pedagogical skills and contribute to increased understanding of data protection issues in the operations.
You are solution-oriented in your approach, with the ability to try new approaches and adapt to changing needs. You have good collaboration skills and thrive both working independently and together with others to achieve common goals.
We will place great emphasis on personal characteristics.
